This Equals was commissioned by Bristol City Council to co-design and deliver a programme of public engagement activities as part of Bristol City Council’s Our Data Programme. This has included ten events, including four hackathons.
Key to our success in delivering these has been ensuring alignment between these activities with a clear focus on addressing local challenges and priorities as outlines in Bristol City Council’s Corporate Plan and the One City Plan. We developed novel and now proven formats for hackathons with a range of produce developed.
Our ambition with this work has been to support the development of the innovation ecosystem, widen community engagement around the role of data, how it is being used, and what more is needed, and to produce tangible outcomes. The events have been attended by over 300 people – subject matter experts, enthusiasts, technologists, and data scientists.
As part of the programme of work, we established the Our Data meetup group with almost 400 people, supported the development of products and apps (some examples here), developed a Community Notes document, and created Bristol.codes, a gitlap space to host the computation code that powers the various data projects.
